The simple habit that can dissolve hidden anxiety

There are moments in our day when something feels slightly off. Nothing obvious has happened, and yet there is a subtle sense of tension, discomfort, or unease that we cannot quite explain. We often move past these moments quickly. We tell ourselves we are fine, we stay busy, and we don’t pause long enough to explore what is actually going on.

But what if these small signals are trying to tell us something important?

The challenge is that we don’t always recognize these moments for what they are. It is not that we are actively ignoring them. It is that we don’t slow down enough to tune into what is quietly brewing underneath the surface. But then, when we later look back at situations where something did not feel quite right, we can often see the signs that were there all along.

For example, before I learned that my ex-husband had been unfaithful, I did not suspect anything at the time. But once I found out, I could clearly see the moments where something had felt off. Looking back, I realized that in those moments, I had sensed that something was not right, yet I had not fully allowed myself to acknowledge it.

It is not that we chose to ignore what is happening. But in hindsight, we can see that if we had allowed ourselves to tune into our bodies, we might have noticed the subtle signals earlier. A tightness in the chest, a knot in the throat, or a quiet sense of uneasiness.

But even when we do notice these signals, there is often a second challenge. We hesitate to look more closely.

It is easy to quickly dismiss what we feel and to tell ourselves, “I am fine,” or “There is nothing wrong.” Not because we are certain that nothing is wrong, but because a part of us is afraid of what we might find if we were to look more closely. So we move on. We distract ourselves and leave the feeling unexplored. But by the time you feel that uneasiness in your body, something has already been activated.

This is why I encourage to name your fear. The invitation here is simple. Instead of turning away from what you feel, you turn toward it. You bring it into the light. You take a moment to ask yourself, “What is actually bothering me right now?” or “What am I afraid of?”

You might be worried about what you might find, but what happens most often when you shine light on these feelings is that the underlying concern is not as significant as you initially thought, or it is something that can be easily resolved once you acknowledge it. The simple act of naming what is bothering you often creates an immediate sense of ease because you are no longer carrying an unknown burden.

Without this step, the feeling remains vague. It lingers in the background and can quietly influence how you think, how you react, and how you move through your life.

With this step, you interrupt that process. You bring the unconscious into awareness. You move from a general sense of uneasiness to something you can actually understand and respond to.

There may be moments where you find yourself afraid to go deeper. Especially in situations where the truth feels uncertain or difficult to face. But from personal experience I know that what remains unexamined will continue to create tension beneath the surface. It will show up as ongoing anxiety, restlessness, or a persistent sense that something is not quite right.

I understand that facing some things will bring discomfort in the moment, but trust me when I say that, in the long run, choosing to face these potential concerns head on will bring you closer to resolution, clarity, and peace than continuing to avoid them. Because even when you try to avoid seeing what is happening in your life, the underlying concern will continue to affect you until you are willing to acknowledge it, or life eventually creates circumstances that make it impossible for you to ignore.

In the end, naming your fear is not about creating more worry. It is about creating clarity. By bringing what is hidden into awareness, you interrupt automatic reactions and give yourself the space to respond with intention to what truly matters.
